IEEE 1641

In this portion of the knowledge base you can find all of the details on the current 2010 version of the IEEE 1641 standard. For users already familiar with the details of the standard, you may recognise that this content has been moved from the "Signal and Test Definition" site. Much like the original "Signal and Test Definition" website, the content has been split to make the information easily digestible for users who are either new to the IEEE 1641 standard, or who are looking to build upon prior knowledge. In addition you will also be able to access any papers written from the conferences that take place throughout the year, including AutoTestCon.

IEEE Std 1641™, the Standard for Signal and Test Definition provides a means of unambiguously defining the Signals and Tests required when creating and executing test requirements. It provides the capability to describe, control and measure signals, whilst permitting a choice of operating environment, including the choice of test language.

It allows test information to pass more freely between the design, test and maintenance phases of a project, enabling the same information to be used directly across project phases. This more efficient use of information, leads to reduced life cycle costs. This is especially true for long term military and avionics projects, as the signals are defined, it is a straightforward process to re-host test programs in the future.

IEEE 1641 has replaced ATLAS as the test language of choice for test systems supplied to the military. MOD policy, defined under the Acquisition Operating Framework (AOF) and its supporting layers, requires all new Automatic Test Systems to be of an open architecture design and to use IEEE 1641 as the test language. The Defence Logistics Support Chain Manual JSP 886 and the new defence standard Def Stan 66-31 Part 8 both reference the IEEE 1641 standard.

IEEE Std 1641™ - 2010

The current version of IEEE 1641 was approved and published by the IEEE in 2010. Its formal title is "IEEE Std 1641™ –2010, IEEE Standard for Signal and Test Definition." It is a revision of the original version of IEEE 1641 that was published in 2004.

Open Source Software for OSA Run-Time

The UK MoD has sponsored the development of a suite of source code that will be made available to contractors employed in the provision of test system software to the MoD and coalition partners. The primary purpose of this ‘open source software’ is to provide a working test system software framework that meets the requirements of the MoD's Def Stan 66-31 (Open Systems Architecture), and in particular, the use of IEEE 1641 and ATML.

MOD Sponsored Demonstrations

The UK MOD has sponsored several demonstrations of the use of IEEE 1641. Initially, these were performed to prove the concept and were performed during the development of the standard. Subsequently, these projects were designed to test the use of IEEE 1641 in more advanced program techniques, and to provide input to assist the further development of the standard. These reports and presentations have been released with the permission of the UK MOD to promote the further understanding and use of IEEE 1641.
